Â
In the state of New York, every vehicle registered in the state must get an inspection at a DMV-licensed inspection station.
Â
Every vehicle registered with the state of New York must receive a safety inspection within the following time frames:
- every 12 months
- when ownership of a vehicle is transferred
Â
Upon completion of the inspection, owners will be provided with a valid inspection sticker that they must visibly display on their vehicle. If you fail to display a valid inspection sticker on your vehicle, consequences could include:
- receiving a fine
- receiving a parking ticket
- inability to renew the registration of the vehicle
Â
Most vehicles must also be subjected to an emissions or diesel emissions inspection at the same time as the safety inspection, though some vehicles are exempt from this requirement. In order to find out if your vehicle does not have to undergo the emissions inspection, check the list of criteria on the New York DMV website.
Â
If you have a vehicle registered with the state of New York, you can identify DMV-licensed inspection stations by looking for a yellow and black sign labeled "Official Inspection Station." However, if you purchased a vehicle from a dealership, the dealer should have performed the inspection prior to delivering the vehicle to you. Otherwise, vehicles purchased from a private seller must be inspected, but owners will be given a 10-day extension.
